2011 Orvis Free Fishing Day

It's time to introduce the whole family or maybe just yourself, to the sport of fly-fishing at one of our Orvis/Trout Unlimited-sponsored free fly-fishing events. With volunteers from both the Mason-Griffith and Headwaters Chapters of Trout Unlimited, you'll learn the basics of fly-casting, as well as a few easy-to-tie knots, how to set up a balanced rod and reel outfit and a short introduction to the insects upon which trout feed and the proper fly selection. Included with the class is a free $25 gift certificate from Orvis, as well as a free $35 membership to Trout Unlimited. It's better than free! Everyone is welcome, and all necessary equipment is provided (please bring your own rods and reels if you already have them). This is the perfect opportunity to introduce kids, spouses or parents to the sport. Similar classes cost $100 or more. Call it a gift! No one will know the difference.

Attendees should bring appropriate clothing, including sunglasses or eye protection, a hat and rain gear if necessary, as well as bug dope, and something to drink or snack-on. There is no fishing license required for this event. Experienced Au Sable and Manistee guide, and Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor Mark Hendricks will be the head instructor at these events. He is great at introducing people to fly-fishing.

Participants should know that although there is no actual "fishing" involved with the Free Fly Fishing Day, they are more than welcome to stay after class and put their new or enhance skills to use on the stream. We're located on the banks of the famous Au Sable River, internationally known for its prolific insect hatches and great fly-fishing. There are numerous access points near the lodge that provide both safe and easy wading.

Dates: May 28, June 18, and July 2
Time: Classes start at 9 am.

Class limit is 15
